Hot Tub Safety Guidelines
-
Shower Before Entering
Always shower or bathe with soap before getting into the hot tub. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, lotions, deodorants, and creams that can affect the water's cleanliness and reduce the effectiveness of the disinfectant and filters. -
Limit Your Time in the Hot Tub
Spending too much time in a hot tub can cause nausea, dizziness, fainting, or lightheadedness. To avoid this, limit your soak to 15-20 minutes at a time. If you’d like to stay in longer, take a break, cool down for a few minutes, and then re-enter. Lowering the water temperature to 98.6°F (37°C) can also allow for a slightly longer soak.- Pregnant women should not stay in a hot tub for more than 10 minutes. If you feel uncomfortable, get out immediately and always keep your arms and chest above the water to prevent overheating.
- Children should also be limited to 10 minutes in the hot tub.
-
Avoid Alcohol and Drugs
Drinking alcohol or using drugs in a hot tub can be dangerous. These substances raise body temperature, which increases the risk of overheating. They can also cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired judgment, which may lead to accidents or drowning. -
Supervise Children & Restrict Use for Kids Under 10
Children under 10 years old should not be in or near a hot tub, as their bodies struggle to regulate temperature. For children 10 and older, always supervise them closely, especially near suction vents. Use raised seats to ensure their heads stay above water, and keep the temperature below 98°F (37°C) when they are in the tub. -
Keep Your Head Above Water
Hot tubs have powerful suction vents to circulate warm water. Submerging your head near these vents can be dangerous, as long hair may get caught and tangled. If you have long hair, secure it in a ponytail or bun to prevent accidents. -
Avoid Electrical Devices Near Water
Keep all corded electrical devices—such as phones, radios, and TVs—away from the hot tub. If you must use a device, opt for a battery-powered one and place it on a dry surface away from the water. Also, make sure there are no electrical outlets near the tub to prevent electrocution hazards.
By following these safety tips, you can enjoy a relaxing and risk-free hot tub experience. Stay safe and soak responsibly!
