Lower Cholesterol With Flax Seed
A major health problem that we are suffering from in the U.S. is high cholesterol. Flax seed is now being considered an effective new method to combat high cholesterol in males. Professor Suzanne Hendrich, an expert in food science and human nutrition, led a recent study which examined the effects of flaxseed lignan in ninety people with high cholesterol. By eating about three tablespoons (150 milligrams) of flaxseed lignans per day there were decreased cholesterol levels in men by just under 10 percent over the three month study. Dr. Hendrich explained that “Because there are people who can’t take something like Lipitor, this could at least give you some of that cholesterol-lowering benefit. The other thing is, there are certainly some people who would prefer to not use a drug, but rather use foods to try to maintain their health. So this potentially would be something to consider.” The number of people suffering from high cholesterol is now around 17%, according to the Center for Disease Control. Having a natural option for dealing with this problem mean a lot to many of the diagnosed.
