Tips for Relieving Dry Skin

Keep your skin healthy and moist

Healthy skin is very important, but it’s so easy to damage skin without realizing it, that it sometimes doesn’t even occur to you that you’re damaging your skin until it actually happens. Here at HEALTHandMED, we understand, so we’ve compiled some tips for you that will help you maintain moist, radiant skin.

Use Cooler Water when Cleansing

A little known fact about hot water on skin is that it removes the natural oils that protect the skin and keep it smooth and healthy. These oils also aid in keeping the skin moist. To prevent the loss of these oils, always take cooler baths or showers. The rule of thumb is if your skin is red after you exit the bath or shower, then the water was too hot.

Take fewer and shorter baths and showers

Yep, it’s one of those never-ending conundrums in life. You need to keep your skin clean to keep it healthy, but cleaning it too much can remove the natural oils and damage your skin. Try to avoid taking frequent and long baths and showers. Instead keep your showers or baths at 5 to 10 minutes and once a day.

Use Soap-Free Cleansers

Soap also removes the protective oil barrier and dries the skin. Soaps are alkaline and can aggravate existing dry skin. Use a gentle non-soap cleanser or the mildest soap available.

Use Redmond Clay

Products like Redmond Clay facial mud were created to keep moisture in the skin. Use of these and other natural skin care products as directed will help keep your skin moist and healthy.

Use an Exfoliant

It’s important to use alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliants in order to naturally remove dead skin cells and enhance the skin’s ability to retain moisture. AHAs make skin extra-sensitive to the sun so make sure you apply sunscreen when using.

Use Sun Protection

Speaking of sun damage, damage caused by the sun is one of the main causes behind dry skin, wrinkles, and roughness. Help prevent sun damage by using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen year-round and a lip balm with SPF 15 sunscreen to prevent dry, chapped lips. If you must tan, use a healthy tanning solution.
