Reusable, BPA Free Canning Jar Lids!

BPA (Bishpenol A) continues to make headlines as a chemical found in most plastics that leaches from food containers and makes its way into our bodies and causes health problems. For canning enthusiasts, a new type of BPA free canning jar lid has just started making its way into the spot light.

Traditional methods of preserving food in canning jars has recently reemerged as a popular practice as it is seen to be a way of storing food in a container that will not leach BPA or any other toxic chemical. The thought that has crossed many a-canner’s mind though is whether or not the plastic coated canning lids present a contradiction. When canning food in a jar there is a small space that separates the food from the lid, which allays the worries of many. For those who don’t want the risk of plastics effecting their food there is a reusable BPA-free lid made by Tattler that can be used in the place of the plastic coated throw away lids. According to Tattler, their lids “are manufactured using a plastic compound that is safe for direct contact with food products. We utilize an FDA and USDA approved, food grade product known as Polyoxymethylene Copolymer (POM) or Acetal Copolymer,” and they do “not contain any Bisphenol A (BPA)!”
