Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion is meant to help remove scars or pox marks other skin ailments that may have occurred due to accident or disease, but it’s important to note that it’s not effective in treating congenital skin defects, most moles, or burn scars. This procedure is done in the doctor’s office and will likely include medications or shots. Dermabrasion is done through the use of a high-speed instrument with an abrasive wheel or brush that removes outer layers of your skina nd improves any irregularities in your skin’s surface.

Side effects of Dermabrasion include temporary or permanent changes in skin color or darkening of the skin, scars, and infection. It’s also important not to drink alcohol 48 hours after the dermabrasion procedure. It’s also important to note that discoloration may be more noticeable on darker skin.

As we’ve discussed previously here at HEALTHandMED, Microdermabrasion involves tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin to gently remove the outer layer of your skin, a procedure that’s much “softer” on the skin than dermabrasion and so does not require medications, surgery, anesthetics, or shots. It’s a procedure that leaves your skin looking softer and brighter. It also works on all skin colors and types, since it only makes subtle changes and doesn’t result in any scarring or color change.

Microdermabrasion would not be an effective procedure to use for bigger skin problems like deep wrinkles or acne scars, but there is less down time than with dermabrasion. Skin is temporarily pink but fully recovers within 24 hours and there are no long term side effects.
